Day in Melaka
22.02.2023
I had a lovely breakfast across the street from my hotel in a restaurant called Gravy Baby. I had a table right next to the river. After I ordered I looked down and saw what looked like a small crocodile swim past! I couldn’t get my phone out fast enough to take a picture but as he was heading out of site, I saw his tongue stick out and could see that he was actually a large lizard! Who knew!! Anyway I had a scrambled egg avocado toast and a latte. Delicious!
The street named Jonker is a very popular street so I walked the length of it, stopping in shops to see what they had. Then turned and went back on a parallel street. Then I walked over the bridge and down to where I could get a ticket on the boat cruise. The open air boat goes up and down the river with a narration about what we are seeing. It was a comfortable boat and great to see so much right along the river. It lasted about 40 minutes.
After the boat ride I went back to my hotel. It had started to rain and I was pretty hot. My hotel is in the perfect location. Everything is within walking distance so I can go back and relax and cool off between forays.
Doug had mentioned a restaurant so I thought I would try it for lunch. It’s called the Baboon House. It’s very inside with plants and such. It’s a burger place. I know it’s not considered local food but the burger I ordered was a pork belly burger. It was delicious!! And an orange wine to go with it. It was a great meal! On the way back to the hotel I stopped at a museum. It’s a early 19th century home of a wealthy family. The husband was Chinese and the wife was Malaysian. The furnishings were old and ornate. Nothing looked very comfortable but they didn’t have recliners back then. It was interesting to see how the rich lived in that time period.
I took a little nap and then at around 4:30 I went down the street to a place called Bikini Toppings. I ordered a coconut jelly. I wasn’t exactly sure what it was but I love coconut so I gave it a try. It was coconut juice that had been thickened to make a jelly. It was cold and served in a coconut. It was yummy.
For dinner I picked a place off the beaten path and ended up being the only person in the place! But the food was good and the owner was a nice lady that I had a little chat with. After dinner I walked along the river where there are lots of bars and restaurants. At night everything is lit up and there are a lot of people walking around. The river cruises run in the evening to see all the lights. This is a charming town.
